The world is facing increasingly serious ecological and social challenges. Yet many leaders draw precisely the wrong conclusion from this reality.

Their reasoning often runs as follows: If we cannot be sure that humanity will achieve sustainability at scale, why invest strategically in that direction? Better to wait and see.

This is a fundamental strategic mistake.

We do not need certainty about the final outcome to know which direction improves our prospects. Whether humanity ultimately achieves a successful transition or faces a bitter end, strategic sustainable development, as codified in the FSSD, delivers benefits all along the way: lower costs, greater resilience, stronger innovation, higher levels of trust, and access to growing markets for solutions that help society navigate tightening ecological and social constraints.

Consider the Titanic as an analogy. Even if a collision with the iceberg were unavoidable, the quality of leadership would still matter. Strategic leadership of the teams on board would provide the above benefits directly, regardless of the ship’s final fate. The same applies today. Strategic leadership improves organizational performance regardless of how quickly, or even whether, society succeeds in addressing its sustainability challenges.

History offers another lesson: paradigm shifts often arrive more rapidly than expected. Across energy, transportation, materials, agriculture, and industrial systems, innovations are already gaining momentum because they make technical, economic, and strategic sense.

The question is therefore not whether we can guarantee a sustainable future.

The question is whether we position ourselves wisely while the future unfolds.

Organizations that do so gain advantages today while simultaneously helping society move in the right direction and perhaps reaching the bridge in sufficient numbers and in time to change the course of the whole ship.

That is not idealism.

It is enlightened self-interest.
