Pitching the FSSD Operative System through a wall until first ABCD workshop is played
More or less all proponents of the FSSD’s Operative System ‘ABCD-in-Funnel’ understand that the time for global marketing has come. After 35+ years of developments of rigorous peer-reviewed theory and action research in case studies, the time has arrived for a powerful global sharing of the Operative System. Already before this moment in time, the Operative System has proven itself to not be particularly difficult to share between departments, sectors and value chains of individual organizations. All because of its unique and helpful design. But this is only once our clients have begun playing Sustainability Chess or “Sustainability SWOT”. So, how do you get them into the room? First, the reason for our track record of successful developments in science and everyday business is simple to understand: (i) The Operative system is designed to improve on bottom lines from upfront, (ii) No costs are involved, (iii) It’s all about investments and organizations are in full control of those, (iv) The clear strategic overview makes it a relief to finally get out of piecemeal “solutions” that led astray into suddenly increasing costs, lost market opportunities and worse problems. But what about before that moment, before their first ABCD workshop with its “Aha’s”. How do you get the leaders into the room in the first place? This is a shared, difficult nut to crack for all FSSD practitioners. How do you not fall in the trap of clichés (“join us to a better world”), or science-jargon (“intuitive and easy-to-understand design science to help you do the right thing instead of fixing myriad symptoms from not doing it”)? (See my recent reflection about this).
So, what about the following easy-to-get pitches, imagined as 3×40 seconds each in an elevator, on three subsequent mornings with the same colleague in the elevator.
First 40 second pitch:
35 years of scientific exploration has brought about the one and only basic methodology to…
- Bring all methods and tools for sustainability together into cohesion, explaining how they relate to sustainability and each other.
- Helping you and your colleagues and value chains to (i) earn more money from day 1, and (ii) avoiding to fix one problem by inventing another.
Second 40 seconds pitch (next day in the same elevator). Hi again, the Operative system also helps you…
- Merging the seemingly unmergeable, (i) ethics with money, (ii) the small organization with the whole world, and (ii) today with the future.
- Navigating the complex archipelago of rocks, confusing trade-offs, and lanterns of other boats that are sailing off course.
- Making co-Creation of sustainability in your company and value chain more fun too, because that is what clear overviews shared between colleagues and partners do.
Third 40 seconds pitch (next day in the same elevator). Hi again, and, finally…
- The Operative system helps you manage all nitty-gritty details as well from within and outside the sustainability challenge, e.g. (i) how to model your goals within scientifically robust boundary conditions for (re)-design of future goals, (ii) develop strategically relevant indicators to monitor and communicate your step-wise way towards such goals, (iii) author your annual reports as effective communication tools rather than as extra administrative burdens, (iv) develop your guidelines for procurement and supply chain management, (v) making trustworthy evaluations of scalable vs. doomed investment strategies for future markets and – again – have more FUN when you share this knowledge with your colleagues, value chains and other stakeholder networks. It is like football or chess or any strategic game, where players and audience and referees share the same set of rules and definitions of “winning”.
